The Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati is
an apostolic Catholic women's religious
community that exists to carry out the Gospel
of Jesus Christ through service and prayer
in the world. More than 500 Sisters are
joined in their mission by approximately
130 Associates (lay women and men). Sisters,
using their professional talents as ministers
of education, health care and social services,
currently live and minister in 33 U.S. dioceses
and one foreign country. They also sponsor
institutions to address education, health
care and social service needs, with particular
concern for direct service to the poor.
The
first Sisters of Charity came to Cincinnati
from Emmitsburg, Md., in 1829. They were
members of the religious community founded
in 1809 by St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. The
Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati became
an independent foundation in 1852 under
the leadership of Margaret George, a widow
and mother like her friend Elizabeth Seton.
The
ministry of the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati
has grown over the years to meet the needs
of our rapidly changing world. In June 2004
the congregation merged with the Vincentian
Sisters of Charity of Bedford, Ohio (near
Cleveland). The Vincentian Sisters made
vows as Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati.
The
one unchanging dimension of the congregation’s
ministry has been fidelity to the spirit
of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. The Charity
spirit is captured in the community motto:
The love of Christ urges us û (2 Cor. 5,
14).
