Sister
Maria Tarsicia, Nurse, Hospital Administrator:
Dog Lover
Sisters
of Charity of the Incarnate Word, San Antonio
Sister
Maria Tarsicia is a quick-witted ball of energy
with an extensive educational background, a profound
love of dogs, and a lifetime of service to the
Lord as a member of the Mexico providence of the
Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the
Incarnate Word (CCVI).
Sister
Maria took her first vows in San Antonio in 1943.
"That was during the time when religious
people of all faiths were being persecuted in
Mexico, so the Congregation sent us all to safety
in Texas," she recalled. With degrees in
nursing, obstetrics, hospital administration,
cardiology, and art history, Sister Maria has
performed incredible work on behalf of the Congregation.
Her career includes service as a registered nurse
and administrator at Hospital Mugerza in Monterrey,
Mexico; membership on the faculty of the University
of Puebla—where she was later sent to create
and open a school of nursing; and an extensive
career in cardiology at Mexico City's renowned
International Institute of Cardiology.
"My
parents told me and all of my brothers and sisters
that our futures were dependent upon an excellent
education," said Sister Maria. Twice a year
she renews her bonds with her siblings during
grand family reunions which are distinctive not
only because of the number of degreed siblings,
but also the number of dogs in attendance!
"We
had a puppy when we were children in Yucatan.
He died from exposure to the elements, so today,
each of us has his or her own dog, and we all
spoil them and care for them well," she explained,
holding "Chiquillo," a friendly canine
that resides at the Provincial House with her,
and sports a crocheted cape donated by a friend.
