Sisters of the Holy Spirit and Mary Immaculate (SHSP)

The Sisters of the Holy Spirit and Mary Immaculate were founded in 1893 by Margaret Mary Healy-Murphy in San Antonio, Texas. Pentecost Sunday, 1887, Mrs. Murphy heard the pastor of her parish read the Bishops' letter, about the need for the Church to reach out to the African American Community. In response, Mrs. Murphy, the recently widowed wife of the mayor of Corpus Christi, built St. Peter Claver Catholic Church and school in 1888. She experienced difficulty in finding teachers, and she was moved to found a religious congregation to assist with the work and to see that the ministry continued beyond her own lifespan. Before her death in 1907, she had set up a school in Laredo, Texas and an orphanage in Oaxaco, Mexico.

Over the years the Sisters of the Holy Spirit and Mary Immaculate have committed themselves to working with the economically poor. Sisters are involved in education, religious education, pastoral care, social work, and health care. They minister in the United States, Mexico and Zambia.
